Gray， a renowned educational psychologist and reading authority from theUniversity of Chicago became a senior co-author with William H. Elson increating this series.The authors haveattempted to provide an interesting， purposeful， and comprehensive readingcourse for children. To achieve this purpose the authors have assembledmaterials from the worldwide field of children’s favorite readings. 作者簡介

　　威廉· Ｓ· 格雷（William Scott Gray， 1885- 1960）美國芝加哥大學博士、教授，曾擔任芝加哥大學教育系研究生院閱讀研究專業(yè)主任，及世界閱讀學會首任會長。在近40 年的時間里，他一直是世界閱讀研究的權威學者。他在芝加哥大學的博士論文題為“小學閱讀的標準化測試”。他帶領的研究團隊，將閱讀技巧訓練與閱讀效果檢測相結合，并將學術研究成果應用于學校閱讀教材的編寫，《Basic Readers》便是他與另一位教育者和教材編寫專家合作的成果。威廉· Ｈ· 愛爾森（William Harris Elson，1856-1935）出生于美國俄亥俄州卡洛爾，畢業(yè)于美國印第安納大學。作為一位教師與教育管理者，他在教育改革方面做出了很大貢獻。1907 年他建立了美國第一所技術高中。此外，他還是一位著名的教材編寫者，除本套教材外，他編寫了多套美國學校使用的現代教材。這些教材除美國外，在全球34 個國家銷售使用，累計銷量超過5000萬冊。
