久未得來(lái)函，你的 Affaire d' Amour 近來(lái)如何？我愿將靈魂賣(mài)給 Satan，要看一看做 Lover 的石詩(shī)人是怎么樣子。

前日溫源寧對(duì)弟說(shuō)，石民漂亮得很，生得很像 Angel，當(dāng)時(shí)廢名兄也在旁，這話(huà)大概是你所樂(lè)聞吧！

近來(lái)因?yàn)榉偶?，只辦半天工，閑暇較多，常在家里無(wú)事此靜坐，但是總坐不久，結(jié)果又是找人談天，亂跑一陣，因此深感到我們一天都是在“躲避自己”里過(guò)活，這也是我們所以需要大都會(huì)，的確是近代人的 Morbidity。

前日讀一篇 Lermentove 短篇小說(shuō)，碰到一首詩(shī)，也是說(shuō)帆的，他真可以叫做“帆的詩(shī)人”了。錄之于下：

On the rolling waves

Of the deep, green sea,

Many white-sailed ships

Sail away from me,

'Mid those ships in one

That is borne to me;

Two oars guide it on

The billows of the sea.

Great ships stretch their wings,

When winds and storms arise,

And each her weary course

Across the waters plies,

I bow me low and pray;

"Quell thy wicked wave,

My own dear little boat

Upon thy bosom save! "

My boat it bears to me

Treasures manifold,

Steered through night and storm

By head and hand so bold.

這也是一首好詩(shī)，不過(guò)跟你所譯的另一種情調(diào)，在茫茫人海里，我希望你已望見(jiàn)你的小舟了。太 Sentimental 了，未能免俗。

袁、顧二先生想已會(huì)面，顧君在這里也正如足下現(xiàn)在一樣。北大經(jīng)費(fèi)渺茫，請(qǐng)你催一下款子（Moll Flanders 已譯完，共剩有四百九十元），Gogol 已動(dòng)筆譯了沒(méi)有？請(qǐng)你將 Proper name 的譯名定下，這事是非編輯先生大筆一揮不可，否則不足以泣鬼神。

小侄女名字叫做燕瑛，譯作英文當(dāng)然是 Peking Beauty 了。北海前日有 vacancy，但據(jù)云彼處現(xiàn)非學(xué)過(guò)圖書(shū)館學(xué)之人不用，這真是無(wú)可奈何。

小孩又哭了，不能再寫(xiě)，請(qǐng)速回信。
